In its 12-year history, the Dutch Auction has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants. The auction process has been effective in determining fair market prices for summer rentals at Roton Point Club.
Throughout the years, I have maintained a policy of not sharing data or predictions about the supply and demand of rental units. This approach was designed to prevent potential manipulation of the auction and to avoid misleading participants with potentially inaccurate information. The unpredictable nature of supply and demand in this market has consistently shown that transparency in this area could lead to unintended consequences.
While price fluctuations can be challenging for both owners and renters, the auction's closing price has proven to accurately reflect the market conditions for each particular year. Trends rarely carry over from one year to the next, highlighting the dynamic nature of our rental market.
One participant's ongoing concerns about data transparency culminated in a legal communication demanding changes to our approach. After careful consideration, and despite my confidence in the fairness and legality of the current system, I have decided to discontinue conducting the auction. I am not interested in wasting the resources of the courts, other attorneys, or my own time on this matter. Conducting the auction each year has also been very time-consuming and stressful.
Looking forward, I believe there is an opportunity for the Roton Point Club to develop its own process for connecting owners and renters while determining fair market prices. If you support this idea, I encourage you to share your thoughts with the Roton Board of Directors at board@rotonpoint.org.
Since the auction's inception in 2012, it has been a privilege to serve our community. While I regret that I will no longer be able to continue this service, I hope that the club will build upon the auction's legacy to create an equally effective and fair system.
Thank you for your understanding and support over the years. I am hopeful that the Roton community will continue to find innovative ways to address the needs of both owners and renters in the future.
Best regards,
Tommy
